The Friday 5 #108
What to drink this month, my new well-loved cookbook challenge and what’s on my summer reading list (not food. For once)
I’m still reeling from the reaction to the post I put up about well-used cookbooks a couple of weeks ago. There was such a great response I’ve been wondering how to channel all that passion for older cookbooks and I think I’ve come up with a plan!
Which is to encourage you all to make a recipe from a favourite cookbook that’s more than 10 years old. Kicking off with quiche (or any savoury tart) if you want to start thinking about it. Full post and explanation next week!
I’m also ringing the changes a bit with the wine recommendations, suggesting types of wines you might like to try this month to encourage you to expand your wine knowledge and become more adventurous.
That’s of course the point of our monthly tastings too - this month’s, at 6.30pm BST on Monday August 19th, is on affordable fizz so we will be chatting about alternatives to champagne though that is sometimes cheaper than comparable sparkling wines
You have to be a paying subscriber to take part but you can join for as little as £5 a month though a year’s subscription as I probably bore you to tears pointing out is better value at £42 or £3.50 a month. Less than £1 a week
Also in this week’s Friday 5 does The Sportsman live up to the hype, a first take on where to eat in Margate and a great new place to have lunch in Covent Garden.
Apologies again if you got a random email about gift subscriptions, I had the referral button switched on which appears to mean such emails are generated automatically.
I’m not entirely happy about that although if I get a similar offer from another Substack I subscribe to I tend to think ‘that’s nice I wonder if X would enjoy it.’ But I can see it might be come across as too much of a hard sell.
What do you feel?
Anyway I’ve switched it off for the moment so you shouldn’t be bothered again but you can still give someone a sub if you want to at any point.
