How I loved and miss looking out for the walnut tree to denote a heuriger. And in autumn walking past fields of sunflowers to reach them, to drink jugs of the new wine. Bliss.
Sacher torte, the OG at Hotel Sacher's cafe. Beautifully packaged for sale at the airport too. Whenever friends fly through Vienna airport, they have strict orders to bring me back cake!
If you'd failed to make it into Café Landtmann I would have been forced to have words. It was always my go-to cafe in the half year I was lucky enough to live and work in Vienna. You lucky person getting to spend time in my joint favourite city (the other is Copenhagen)!
What, no Sacher torte, well you would have had to walk at least another 5k to burn it off. Fiona for a price they will send you some: https://www.sacher.com/en/original-sacher-torte/. I was constantly looking for Harry Lime in the streets around the Bäckerstrasse, but he was so elusive! I haven’t been for 10 years and have put it back on the list.
have never been to Vienna, but my great grandmother came from Bohemia, from a little town very close to Austria. It’s an culinary treasure trove, the entire corner of the three adjoining cultures, bavarian being the third. Their cuisine includes lots of interesting sweet dishes as main courses as well as savory things to eat at vesper, a melange of flavors from the entire spectrum that is very unique. thank you for the insight and new reminder to finally go!
I love the art district. Amazing exhibitions and it’s wonderful to see parents taking their very young children to an art gallery in a Sunday. I think Vienna is one of Europes best kept secrets. No one ever tells you about it and it’s magical.

That must be a lovely time to go too
It really is

Wish I'd known about that. Rats!

Yes, Copenhagen is great too though haven't been for a while. I liked Landtmann better than Central. Better service, slightly less kitsch

It really is the most charming city. Good thing I didn’t know about the sacher torte by post ….😉

Yes, you absolutely must!
Such a winderful city, but not for the reasons we were first expecting. Apropos:

That's a great read too! Thanks for including the link.
Vienna is a destination transformed. It’s even lovelier and tastier than before.

Ah, missed out on that as I was basically going for work. Next time!
Love Klimt. Your photos are beautiful!
Thanks, Jeanine!
Loved this – and am so pleased to know how to make that wonderful potato salad!
I found out how to make it when I went to the Oktoberfest. Must make it again now I'm home!
Thank you for putting it on your website!
One of my life’s goals is to take part in a schnitzelthon. 🥇
Easily realisable 😉
Perfect. 😁
Did you try the Schilcher rose wine? it's one of my favourites not so readily available in the UK.
