Matching Food & Wine July update
Win a KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer with a Shave Ice attachment
A warm welcome to all you new subscribers and thank you so much for coming on board,
Having signed up to Eat This Drink That some of you may be a bit baffled at this reference to Matching Food & Wine so forgive me, old timers, if I recap.
This is the regular free update on what I posted on my website matchingfoodandwine.com last month and news of our latest fantastic competition.
The rest of the emails you’ll get will be headed Eat This, Drink That and you won’t get them all if you’re not a paid subscriber. Sorry, but a gal’s got to make a living and it helps to keep the website, which people tend to find incredibly useful for winepairing advice, free for you all to access.Â
So it would be really, really nice if you’d sign up - an annual subscription, if I may gently remind you, costs less than a cup of coffee 😉
Anyway enough of this relentless self-promotion - on to the stuff you want to hear about …
Win a KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer with a Shave Ice attachment
We really do have an incredible prize for you this month! A fabulous KitchenAid 4.8L Artisan Stand Mixer plus the clever new Shave Ice Attachment to enable you to make fancy shaved ice at home
So basically it will not only look divinely beautiful on your kitchen worktop and do everything KitchenAid Stand Mixers are famous for, such as whipping, beating and kneading, but you will be able to make shaved ice for show-off desserts and drinks such as granitas and margaritas.
If you want to be in with a chance of winning click here. (UK-based entries only I’m afraid)
Last month’s top wine pairings
Madeira and French onion soup (sort of)
It’s not every month you get to go to a three Michelin-starred restaurant so one of my matches of the week HAD to be this pairing of a 1999 sercial madeira with ‘gratinated onion’ (basically a deconstructed French onion soup) at Le Cinq in Paris
Camembert-style cheese and amphora aged Bacchus
A top cheese and sparkling wine pairing I discovered during English Wine Week
Sweetbreads with mushrooms and Dog Point pinot noir
Which goes to prove New Zealand pinot noir can be as much of a star as burgundy
Smoked eel and alcohol-free lager
Just because a drink doesn’t contain alcohol doesn’t mean it can’t make a great match.Â
Recipes you might want to make
Breadcrumbed tomatoes baked in cream with fried chicken
From Claire Thomson’s new book Tomato
Charred tomatoes with cool yoghurt, pomegranate molasses and herbs
More tomatoes, this time from Helen Graves’ cracking barbecue book Live Fire
Gill Meller’s Raised Pork, Chicken and Parsley pie
A great centrepiece for a posh picnic from his new book Outside

Anyway enjoy the sunny week ahead and look out for tomorrow’s Friday 5!

Ooh...that French Onion Soup looks interesting - I like the deconstructed look. I like all things cherry - especially a clafouti (vegan I'm afraid)...and I was in Abruzzo two weeks ago - I agree, outstanding wines for a good price!
I loved the French onion soup as well, and I'd love a recipe for one or two since I'm on my own and I'd something where I don't have a load of leftovers. I tried an onion soup recipe a couple of years ago to treat myself for Christmas, and it was awful, despite me following each step and having been cooking since I was six. I couldn't believe how poorly it turned out, so I'd love to see a suggestion from you.
