Win a Pipers Farm steak box and a case of claret
With the nights drawing in - and the world in the state it’s in - we all need something to cheer us up and this month’s competition should do the trick
First of all there’s a super grass-fed steak tasting box (above, top) from the lovely people at Pipers Farm in Devon with a copy of their new Sustainable Meat Cookbook which full of gorgeous homely - and a few special occasion - recipes like this gorgeous Côte de Boeuf with gratin dauphinoise.
As if that weren’t enough we also have some delicious wine to drink with it - a case of six bottles of Bordeaux from Bristol wine merchant Averys. The wine is the Chateau Les Aubitriés from the excellent 2020 vintage and comes in an impressive wooden gift box

Last month’s top wine pairings
My top pairings last month wereÂ
We’re more used to thinking of Beaujolais as a pairing for charcuterie and other typical French bistro food but it goes with fish too.
Prosecco and burrata
Again you may think of prosecco more as a wine to drink with party nibbles but turns out it’s great with burrataÂ
The highlight of a two Michelin-starred meal at La Dame de Pic which was paired with alcohol-free drinks.
Recipes you might want to make
Cote de Boeuf with dauphinoise potatoes
An indulgent dinner for two from the Pipers Farm cookbook we’re giving away as part of our prize this month
Brown rice and potato pilaf
Brown food can be irresistible as this recipe from Sam and Sam Clark’s new book Moro Easy proves
Ravneet Gill’s Miso caramel and chocolate tart
A reminder of this wickedly good pud from Ravneet Gill. (Yup, that’s brown too. All the best food is!)
Drinks you might want to try
My top drops in October
Include a sublimely elegant Beaujolais, a bargainous Bordeaux, a luscious pudding wine and drink that can’t make up its mind whether it’s a wine or a cider . . .
Meanwhile in the Guardian I took a look at why you need to change your mind about chardonnay (if you’ve taken against it), the appeal of acidic wines (despite not sounding especially attractive) and hygge reds which I decided are ‘a thing’.
