Substack has a feature of which I haven’t yet taken advantage which they currently call a Founder membership but is really a premium subscription.Â
I’ve been thinking for a while about what to offer and it seems to me there’s a demand for personalised advice about wine and entertaining generally. Helping you discover new wines. Suggesting recipes you might try. Matching wine to specific menus.Â
I actually do this for one or two mates - I know their tastes and they email me from time to time asking for suggestions to go with a particular recipe or meal.
I’m thinking in terms of an initial 30 minute consultation on Zoom (preceded by a questionnaire so we make the best use of the time) then the option to email me and ask me for up to 5 food and wine recommendations subsequently.
Obviously that’s not going to be as cheap as the standard paid membership as I will have to come up with personalised recommendations but it’s a great way to improve your wine knowledge and find wines you’re going to love, make sure the wines you serve complement the dishes you’re making and show off your wines to best effect.
If you don’t feel the need for that level of advice it would make a great gift for someone who’s hitting a big birthday or even - looking ahead - the perfect Christmas present for that wine-loving family member who has everything.
