The Friday 5 #183
Best wine buys from Lidl, 2 great ways to use broad beans and this month's cookbook giveaway
I was looking forward to giving you the lowdown on the latest Lidl range - who doesn’t love a Lidl bargain? - but TBH it’s a bit disappointing.
Gone - or almost gone - are the days when there were rich pickings around the £5.99/£6.99 mark. £7.99/£8.99 has become the norm and apart from their wines of the week, which are only available to Lidl Plus cardholders, they don’t go in for reductions.
Take their Picpoul de Pinet, for instance - a good example at £7.99 but if you can run to 3 bottles you can buy Morrisons for £7.35 if you’re a More cardholder or pay £7.50 at Tesco (Clubcard holders again).
That said, as usual I’ve found some good buys including a luscious Spanish white I’d be happy to make my house white for the summer.
In other good news it’s cookbook giveaway time and from two of my favourite chefs, Itamar and Sarit of Honey & Co. It’s a beaut.
Also this week:
Two other irresistible cookbooks
Two broad bean recipes and
Thoughts on when to visit a new restaurant with an update on one I can now heartily recommend
Also our rosé tasting at 6.30pm on Monday June 22nd is coming fast up the tracks.
At our last tasting we were inclined to think it should be rosés from places other than Provence but I don’t think anyone’s going to blackball you if you bring a Provence rosé. Try to be a little adventurous though.
Anyway if you’re not a paid subscriber and you’d like to join us (it takes place online) you can subscribe for as little as £5 a month though, as I never tire of pointing out, an annual subscription, which works out at £3.50 a month, is better value.
Of course there are always a couple of free articles a month to read if you’re not like the latest post on Simon Hopkinson in my well-loved cookery writers series which includes some great contributions from your fellow subscribers.
Here we go with the Lidl recs anyway . . .
