The Friday 5 #174
Top wines for Easter from this week’s Tesco tasting, the joy of aioli, the best ever kitchen shop and ... um ... trainers
After the giddy exhilaration of Paris (catalogued here if you missed it) it was down to earth with a bump with the first of the spring season’s supermarket tastings.
Not that Tesco’s is particularly pedestrian - it’s one of the best with an experienced buying team - but it has its frustrations.
Inevitably some of the most interesting wines are only stocked in a limited number of branches and even then might not be on the shelves yet. And they don’t show the vintage online of the ones that have been around longer. Still, I’ve picked out some you might want to try for Easter, crossing fingers they’re available.
You’ll also have to wait for the main Paris post next week but in the meantime a couple of takeaways on the food front including a dish that’s just perfect for this time of year.
There’s also a Greek pop-up at The Pilgrm hotel where I’m the wine writer-in-residence but that doesn’t mean moussaka - to the disappointment of some of you, I imagine. But the food, which includes a yoghurt ice cream in the shape of Aphrodite is extraordinary. Again more on that below.
And as the clocks go forward on Saturday evening - hooray! - we’ve got the perfect wine to celebrate in Sunday’s online tasting: light, fragrant cabernet franc. Although it’s not always light as you’ll discover if you come along. At 6.30pm as you regulars will know. (Sign up for a paid subscription - which you can do for as little as £5 - if you want to join us.)
Finally, a subject you might not expect me to be writing about: trainers. I am the last person to advise on fitness but my life has been transformed …
