The Friday 5 #143
Best buys from the Co-op, why snacks are the new starters and why you need to scorch a peach
I was tempted to make this week’s Friday 5 a snack special.
Snacks are everywhere. In all the usual places - supermarkets, corner shops, fast food joints - but also in high end restaurants too.
No menu, it seems, starts without a selection of snacks these days which of course is a way of getting us to up our spend.
Snacks are the new cover charge or the maybe the new starters, given that starters now cost as much as a main course a few years ago. (I know, I know. Thee are reasons for that as outlined in my recent post.)
Added to that we’re encouraged to make our own.
Search for snack books and you’ll be overwhelmed. A book called The Snack Hacker by the highly entertaining George Egg, who has incidentally just won one of the prestigious Fortnums awards for best content creator, has apparently become an ‘instant’ Sunday Times best seller. Seems we all love a snack.
Does anyone have the time or energy to make proper meals these days? (No need to answer that but go on, do, if you have a view!)
