The Friday 5 #138
A bumper bank holiday rosé round-up, this month’s cookbook giveaway, two dishes (and restaurants) to die for and a highly superior sandwich
It seems too much to hope for that it will actually stay fine this weekend after a week of the most perfect spring weather. It’s apparently caught the supermarkets off-guard. They wouldn’t normally expect a run on rosé until June and are struggling to keep up with demand.
What’s striking from the recent tastings is how many of the best rosés are still French and what good value the Languedoc generally offers compared to Provence. The 10 wines I’ve picked out - 5 cheap and cheerful ones under a tenner and 5 slightly smarter ones under £15 - are all really good buys. Way cheaper than Whispering Angel even with the multi-buy discounts that are being offered this weekend. .
Just a reminder, by the way, that we’ve got our next online tasting on the subject of rosé at the end of next week (7pm on Sunday 11th) by which time - sod’s law - it may be chucking it down.
We’ll look at different styles of rosé, the best countries and wine regions to look for them (does it have to be Provence?) and whether the more expensive rosés are worth it? Plus what sort of food goes with rosé best?
You need to be a paid subscriber to join in but you can sign up for as little as £5 for which you also get access to:
this month’s cookbook giveaway which is Caroline Eden’s gorgeous new book Green Mountains
two smart new London restaurants and the to-die-for dishes I’d go back for
a truly excellent sandwich
and a bit of book chat.
Rosés first though cos you need to go and stock up, don’t you?
