As I explained yesterday, I’ve been spending this week in Madonna di Campiglio in the Dolomites - the mountainous region to the north-east of Italy. The food is, of course, totally different to what it would be in the south, based on meat and dairy rather than tomato, fish and Mediterranean vegetables but perfect for hungry skiers.
Of course there’s pasta and pizza - what self-respecting Italian could live without pizza? - but locals give it an alpine twist often serving it with speck - the addictively delicious local smoked ham.
It might surprise some of you that Trentino, which is where we are based, is an important wine growing region Even more so that it mainly produces red wine although the neighbouring Alto-Adige, whose wines also make their way onto local lists, is predominantly white wine country. But there are also warming drinks that are also perfect for the chilly days of an English - or American - winter.
Here are some of the ideas you could adopt back home and a few places we’ve enjoyed eating in the resort.
