I can’t believe that the big event of the year, the reason for my leaving the Guardian, my trip to Mexico for Day of the Dead has finally come round.

I leave on Monday and of course I’m not ready for it.

I’m down at the Food Festival in Dartmouth (above) having survived a much delayed train journey which sent me into full WHY DON’T THE EFFING TRAINS RUN ON TIME? Grumpy Old Woman mode. Honestly, it’s getting ridiculous.

Anyway if you’ve got any tips for Mexico City or Oaxaca or (less likely I imagine) Patzcuaro which is where we’re going to be for DOTD please share.

Back home of course it’s half term and Hallowe’en which means a whole raft of 25% off supermarket promotions.

Asda, Tesco and Waitrose all have them but as I’ve just been to a Sainsbury’s tasting that’s the one I’m concentrating on this week.

It also happens to be World Champagne Day which might incite you to splurge on a bottle. How much is it worth paying though? Sainsbury’s for example is selling Bollinger for £43 which with the 25% discount off six bottles which don’t all have to be Bolly is £32.25. But that’s still a lot.

I’m far more tempted by their half bottles of Taste the Difference Blanc de Noirs at £14 which works out at £10.50 if you’re buying 6. If you’re a fan of half bottles of champagne - who isn’t? - it’s a bit of a no brainer. Treat yourself!

Also in this week’s Friday 5

  • Why you should get into Beaujolais

  • How you can overcome an aversion to sprouts

  • A couple of good things to make with a pumpkin (or, better still, squash)

  • A reminder about this month’s cookbook giveaway and to start  thinking about my well-loved cookbook challenge next month.

(Forgot to say in the original post that if you’d like to gain access to this exclusive content there’s 33% off an annual subscription until 11.59pm GMT on Sunday October 27th. Click here to take advantage!)
