If you’re expecting the usual wine and restaurant recommendations I’m travelling in Ireland at the moment so Eat This. Drink That has temporarily turned into a travel journal. Which will hopefully be of use if you’re thinking of going yourself or inspire you to if you aren’t … Normal service resumes towards the end of next week

Dingle was on my radar for a reason. Everyone I spoke to talked about the music scene and how could you go to Ireland without seeking out the music?

Which venue to go to though? Well it’s pretty easy - just head down the street and walk into any place where you like the sound of what’s drifting out of the door.

That led to some surprising venues. A pub plastered with shamrocks (The Dingle Pub) I’d have normally avoided like the plague but which had a couple of good musicians (and a big screen to watch the World Cup).

Another, (John Benny’s) on the touristy seafront where we ended up as the place we were heading for was fully booked but which turned out to tick all the boxes. Friendly, not too crowded, served a decent chowder, terrific singer (Teresa Horgan below).

Memo to self. Don’t pre-judge Go with the flow.

That said they weren’t the most atmospheric pubs . . .
