Matching Food & Wine June update
What’s new on my website Matching Food & Wine including this month's brilliant competition!
Hello again all you lovely matchingfoodandwine.com supporters, welcome to those of you who are new to the site and my grateful thanks to all those of you who have signed up for a paid subscription to Eat This Drink That.
I do realise that all these newsletters have become a bit complicated so let me explain.
If you were previously a subscriber to the matchingfoodandwine.com newsletter you’ll continue to get it free, only less frequently - generally once a month. For those who are new to the site it basically updates you on what I’ve posted over the past month including our latest competition which I think it’s fair to say is pretty awesome!
The other newsletters will be headed Eat This, Drink That which is the name of my new Substack subscription newsletter. You’ll be able to see some of those and part of others but to read them in full and access the archive you’ll need to take out a paid subscription which is £36 a year or £4 a month - i.e. less per month than your daily flat white!
For that you get my top five food and drink tips each week (the Friday 5), other regular features, recipes and round-ups and exclusive subscriber giveaways and discounts. And the warm, fuzzy feeling of supporting my website, for which Eat This Drink That is a crowdfunder 😉
So here’s this month’s matchingfoodfoodandwine newsletter and what’s new on the site:
Win a £500 Char-Broil Gas2Coal BBQ and 3 cases of Beefsteak Club Wines
If you’re a bit of a grillophile this is the PERFECT prize for your summer entertaining. The 3 burner BBQ is a hybrid that converts from gas to coal in a matter of seconds, so you can quickly add the smoky flavour of coal whenever the mood takes you and the Beefsteak Club wines, which include a Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec and Malbec Rosé are specifically designed to go with barbecued and grilled food. To find out how to enter the competition click here. It’s a real cracker of a prize
Last month’s top pairings
My top 3 pairings last month were:
Waffles, bacon and Veuve Clicquot champagne
(Can you think of a more decadent breakfast?)
Grilled lamb with a violet mustard glaze and a 25 year old xinomavro
You didn’t know xinomavro could last 25 years? Nor did I! (Or that there was such a thing as violet mustard come to that . . .)
‘Tagliatelle’ of squid and Passerina
Raw cuttlefish with lemon and extra virgin olive oil and a lovely white wine - the highlight of my recent trip to Abruzzo
Recipes you might want to make
Fruit kimchi from Mark Diacono’s new book Ferment from Scratch.
I just love the idea of fruit kimchi or, better still, fruit kimchi pancakes (above)
Sabrina Ghayour’s yoghurt and spice-roasted salmon
Such an easy brilliant recipe. I’ve made it many times
Gill Meller’s raised pork chicken and parsley pie from his new book Outside
Posted for the Jubilee but it would be great for any outdoor weekend lunch
Last month’s top drinks
Most of my recommendations were Jubilee-related and may well be over by now but here’s what I was writing about in the Guardian
The best new summer gins
I particularly like the Martin Miller Rosemary and Arctic thyme above and the Citadelle
I also highlighted a couple of interesting rosés, a funky natural rioja rosado (above) and the first 2022 wine I’ve tasted.
In season
There are pairings and recipes in the archives for all kinds of seasonal ingredients including
My top wine pairings with strawberries
Strawberries are even more delicious with a glass of wine.
10 great wine pairings with salmon
One of the most popular posts on the site
The best wines to pair with crab
Such a lovely summer treat . . .
and what to drink with the last of the asparagus
Make the best of it!
Anyway I hope the weather improves where you are and that you have a lovely month. And look out for my Eat This Drink That emails! (We suspect we may have lost a few of you during the move to Substack so if you’re not sure you’ve been getting our mailings be sure to put the address fionabeckett@substack.com in your contacts file.
