So hi all you lovely matchingfoodandwine.com supporters, welcome to those of you who are new to the site and my grateful thanks to the many, many people who have signed up for a paid subscription to Eat This Drink That. I’m really quite overwhelmed!
Anyway this is your monthly update on what’s been going on at MF&W including our latest competition and WHAT a comp it is!
Win a Magimix Gelato Expert ice-cream maker
If you’re into making your own ice cream you’re definitely going to want to be in with a chance of winning this amazing machine with its inbuilt freezer unit which will make ice-creams, sorbets and granitas in 30 minutes flat. (No having to freeze bowls beforehand)
And if you can’t resist the idea of having one - can’t blame you - we’ve managed to persuade Magimix to offer our subscribers a 10% discount if you want to buy one yourself. Just insert the code MFW10 at the checkout. The discount expires June 30th 2022, but you’re obvs going to use it before then, aren’t you?
Last months top wine pairings
So last month I was blown away by
Vincisgrassi (basically a posh lasagne) and Saint Aubin (above. This was really really good)
Chocolate and Muscadel (muscadel is a rather gorgeous sweet red wine)
Shrimp and soft shell crab burger with vintage champagne. And chips. Honestly, bliss!
Cured trout with Verdita and Vinho Verde. (Told you all about verdita in last week’s Friday 5)
There was also a post on the best wines for ravioli and guess what? It’s the filling not the pasta parcel that you match! Obvious, really when you think about it …
Last month’s top wines
There are going to be more wine recommendations over on Eat This, Drink That. Matching Food & Wine will more about monthly round-ups like these highlights from my Guardian column:
On whether wines under £5 are really worth buying
Wines that go with veggie (and vegan) food
and how to buy a good pinot noir that won’t put you in the red
But I really did like these two Beaujolais …
In season
There are pairings and recipes in the archives for all kinds of seasonal ingredients including
Asparagus
Which wines and beers to pair with asparagus
Signe Johansen’s spring vegetable tart with mustard cream and watercress
Jersey Royals
While wild garlic is in season try this recipe for for Jersey Royal Potatoes with peas, wild garlic and crème fraîche
Herbs
At their best right now but which wine goes with which herb?
Goat cheese
Goes with all the spring veggies but what should you drink with it (apart from sauvignon blanc)?
Bacchus and other English white wines
English wine has moved on but there’s still a lot of Bacchus about. Here’s what to pair with it
Matching Food & Wine Live!
I’m in the process of lining up some live events for later this year but later this month (on Thursday May 26th) I’ll be doing a walk-around food and wine matching event at Tanners in Shrewsbury which is going to be a lot of fun. You can buy tickets which include wine and food here. Come along!
And finally another gentle reminder that you WON’T get the Friday 5 this week or on future Fridays unless you sign up as a paid subscriber. Hopefully that shouldn’t be toooo painful as there’s a 25% discount on an annual membership at the moment bringing the monthly rate down to an eminently affordable £2.25, or less than a glass of sauvignon blanc ….
Paid membership will also entitle you to other discounts and giveaways including our popular cookbook giveaway as well as at least one other post each week including the ETDT recipe edit, Raise your Game (helping you do the simple things better), So you think you don’t like . . . how to learn to love the things (you think) you loathe and some of my favourite recipes that haven’t been published online before. And you’ll be supporting matchingfoodandwine.com in the process…
Check out some of my recent posts to see what you could be missing 😉
