Have you ever thought you might want to cut down the amount you drink? From time to time I do too. Obviously as a wine writer I am constantly surrounded by bottles though like a kid being let loose in a sweet shop the temptation wears off.
Four years ago I wrote a book on the subject called How to Drink without Drinking which was mainly about how you might achieve a semi-permanent or permanent alcohol-free lifestyle but the challenge, I’m increasingly sensing, is how to incorporate at least some booze in your life while not giving it up altogether.
For some that’s exceptionally difficult - it’s either all or nothing - but fortunately that only applies to a few of us. For most it’s simply a question of adopting healthier habits.
It’s actually a similar challenge to eating less or less of what we like. Most of us manage to keep our weight under reasonable control by being mindful of what we eat and not constantly binging on cake, chips and chocolate. Very few of us rule out those foods permanently.
Nor should we have to in the case of booze.
